Between Times is a new online journal based in the UK and continental Europe exploring the relevance of Christian faith in today’s world. Their aim is to provide a space where rigorous scholarship meets charitable discussion — serious without being inaccessible, grounded without being partisan.

The Story of the bible begins in a garden and ends in a city

Between Times was chosen as a name for the journal because it sees all of human history and experience as happening between two points in time. So we went to the bible and saw that the bible's story begings in the garden of eden and ends with a picture of heaven - not as clouds and harps but a city.

Between times is also an academic institution and it was important to capture the academic feel so as to attract well written resources and give confidence in the trustworthy of the articles within.

a Brief history of time

WIthin the bounds of a shield - as you might see on a university crest the whole story of biblical history unfolds; in the foreground we placed a tree - reminicent of the one Eve picked the fruit from in the beginnning. In the background we placed beams of light touching the Earth - signifying the end of the story - a reconciled Heaven and Earth.

Between is where we are now - people not yet home, not perfect yet able to create and build community and cultivate places of human flourishing - wether that be in our homes around the kitchen table or in going out and creating buildings, skycrapers, medicines or cuisine.

We built an online journal that gave people time and space to read in a world with so many distractions battling it out for our attention.

From the outset, one of the absolute non-negotiables for the website was that it had to be distraction-free.

We designed the site to be minimalist and focused on giving visitors only what they need. That didn't mean embracing a brutalist aesthetic. Afterall, one of the organisation's core beliefs is in human flourishing, so the experience still needed to feel enjoyable to use.

Subtle decorative details were carefully introduced alongside thoughtful functionality. With a few clever touches of code, users can switch off most on-page distractions without sacrificing the pleasure of a well-layed out interface. The result is a digital space that encourages focus while still feeling distinctly human.
